Tech Question

Post#1 » 05 Jun 2013, 21:19

So I was pretty pumped about trying out for the guild last night that I went out and bought a new graphics card in efforts to play my best. Needless to say with the higher end card, came the need for more power. Since I bought both at the local retail store due to time restraints, I ended up spending $450 on the two upgrades.

I was very disappointed when during the raid last night my frame rates were dropping down to 5fps at times despite the upgrades and I even went as far as dropping the settings all the way down to FAIR. (UGLY!!!)

I'm hoping that some of the more tech savvy members here may be able to lend some insight as to the low FR's during the raid and possibly lend some advice on a remedy.

My rig is composed of the following...

* Nvidia Geforce GTX 660ti 2g graphics card (1card)
* AMD FX 6100 processor
* Thermaltake 850 "bronze" smart m series power box
* Gigabyte 970A-DS3 mobo

Thanks in advance for any advice you may have!

How much memory are you sitting on? What kind of hard drive are you running.

...did you have recount on?

8 gigs should be enough...

And the HD...well...it's not a SSD :P But that shouldn't be causing that kind of issue.

Recount causes fps loss in 25's pretty normal. I run Titans and recount will lock me up on 25s...I'd try disabling that and grabbing tinydps or skada might help. A few other addons are known to cause fps loss as well.

You can also try turning of SSAO, wow uses a ripped version of the Crysis eng last I checked for SSAO...and it will lock up some new graphics cards right now, just wait for the drivers to get up to you and you can turn it back on.

Did what you suggested, dropped recount plus disabled a lot on non raid related add ons PLUS changed display mode to FULLSCREEN. Adds another 20 fps.

Good stuff!

Wish you had said something Tuesday night. Most lag/fps issues in ToT have been Recount. Recount especially hates when Hunters pop Stampede.

Say hello to Skada, your new best friend. :D

I really disliked how skada handled DPS numbers, i use tinydps myself. a lot less information, but the information i need is still there.

Also, make sure you run the latest drivers from Nvidia and that your game is set to DX11.

And yes, recount is a pain in 25s, skada does better.

Big difference tonight compared to last week. Was hovering between 35-55 during the fights.

So I've been doing some homework and feel my current CPU is the core issue with my rig, so I've decided to ditch the AMD FX-6100 and go for an Intell an I5-3570K. Below are the links to the before, unchanged and soon to be installed components for anyone interested in reviewing. I'm hoping this new system will provide me a steady 45-60 FPS during raids on at least high settings. (I WANT MOAR!!!)

Do not waste your money going SLI it is not supported.

Your right! It is your processor and the heat generated from the load you put on it during game play. Most don't understand this and go nuts spending lots of money upgrading memory and graphics. There are several PC settings to disable while playing as well. You want to reduce as much heat on the processor as possible. If you do get your intel chip make sure you disable Hyperthreading in your BIOS. Turn off windows Aero and run basic theme; there are a few things you can do with your task manager and the running process. Game Booster is a nice little program that will help you there. Hit me up in game if you catch me on and we can talk more :)
