Yeh Id hold off even longer than mid february :0.
Hope no one has spent their tax rebate $ or whatever u guys are waiting for ;0

http://www.expertreviews.co.uk/motherbo ... pts-recall

9xxx series may be superseded this year tho :9

then again buy em fast before the price drops go back up again.

problem seems to be a deterioration in sata 2 controller in 3 years use.. man there could be some dirt cheap stuff available now.

its like when the tadaa pentium came out if you multiplied 1billion often enough it was .003 out in the calculations.
But yeh for now i9xxx is still king for intel at least.
Somebody is gonna lose a lot of money somewhere. amd new year bonuses partty on down.

Maybe all regular 67 chipsets will be upgraded to z 68 :

gigabyte alone produces 9 million motherboards a year in nanking.. if production has been ramping up who knows how long it will take to sort out.

You know what tho once the 2000 chips become available again retail they will have to sell em cheap.
this will all translate into .. people thinking the new intel cpu's are crap which they arent, its a design flaw in the mbrd chipsets. which they will have to fix because so much has been shipped and theyre geared up to produce the cpu's .
Id keep an eye on things over February if you can stand the wait.
Problems like this probably occur with bad bios implementations over the first couple of months with all manufacturers, but theres no way they can fix this without recall.

There could be "good deals" comin thru mid to late february ,maybe even very good,to get the "bad press" wiped from peoples minds.
Who even remembers the original dx 586 (pentium) processor that "couldnt do maths".

If your looking for a deal pick a board with a off northbridge 6gig sata connecter there unaffected by the problem as it's a silicon problem with the P/H67 chipset that only affects the 3gig sata connector. Could be a boon for those looking for sexy performance at a good price.

From what I've seen in my reading this afternoon (while I should've been doing actual work but.. meh), they won't be on track to fully fix the issue till April/May. Feb/March/April will just be damage control (recalls, halting production, fixing the problem, etc). I don't wanna hold off too long, otherwise I might as well wait the year to see what else comes out.

Since I'm not much of an OCer, figure an i7-950 clocked up slightly should cover 99% of my needs. The specs I'm looking at easily beat out some of the guys I see doing all the Starcraft II commentary, and they're able to play/watch the game at great graphics while recording in 1080p.. I think I'll manage for Starcraft II & WoW (my 2 main PC games). Don't wanna eat the price jump from i7-950 to i7-960 (~$300 up to $580), given that the only real difference seems to be 3.06GHz vs. 3.2GHz stock.

Irony of this is, not even 3 days ago I posed the idea to my dad and the first thing he said was "I'd hold off, never trust a 1st iteration of anything", which is one of those rules to live by but I guess these seemed a little too good to be true.

I don't know about that Lith, I mean the issue seems big enough that Newegg, Tigerdirect, Amazon, J&R and most other major retailers I can find have already pulled the 2xxx-series processors, with the exception of BestBuy.. whores. We'll see how it plays out.

Yea i was checking out the sites and they've pulled everything. Even the processors. I guess if you don't have any motherboards to sell not much sense in selling the other. I think we'll see more and more of this kind of stuff as die NM shrink and clock speeds increase. I mean hell there talking about putting dual and quad core processors in cell phones.

Yeh no cpu's or mbrds available
There are actually a couple of the board types lith mentioned mainly sata 3 backward compatible with sata 2(or at least there were ), available but its kinda moot now.
The delay will push back intels release schedule so i79xxx life will extend.

They have to get on a fix fast tho as usb 3 pieces are coming on line, sata 3 buyers will want full data transfer too.
The 1366 kit is still expensive tho, comparatively.

For me in terms of standard clock 1366 items there would be no real performance increase going to i920 or even i950 it would have to be the near $1000 cpu's

A moderate overclock on the 1366 stuff and i would be doing better, but i like to take things to the max (stable).1366 gear is expensive comparatively, but it has been going for awhile.
Id look carefully at the gigabyte ud3ax58 mbrd if going to take the 1366 plunge.

the 1156 higher end i7and i5 can provide just as good or even better performance for non server type apps as the low end 9xxx stuff ,but its been cut off by the bang for your buck of sandy 2000 cpus ,haha or it will be when they get it right.
Im back on the fence now...
I will keep an eye on 1366/1155 prices tho they may or may not shift,1156 isnt worth going for for me ,my lga 775 system will be just fine until the dust settles.

nb i still dont like amd stuff :0.

Tom's did a efficiency benchmark and the new processors pretty much scale strait away. Meaning the more voltage you give it the more mhz you can get out of it on a almost even curve. Pushing up your bus speeds and such on the 1366 creates a vast inefficiency that translates directly to copious amounts of heat for the over clock you get. I read a article on anadtech and the Intel guy said that it's one transistor that is causing the problem. The P67 north bridge chip has 205 million transistors. It appears the fix is to simply turn off that transistor in the C stepping. Here's hopping they don't have another, "gee we didn't catch that" issue with the processor themselves.

the z68 cipset wont be delayed says intel..hah
http://www.tomshardware.com/news/cougar ... 12108.html
z68 (combined h67 and p67 features + improved ssd caching) is then due out around april just around the time that all the faulty cougar point h67 and p67 replacement mbrds are still being despatched.
Pissed off h67 an p67 owners are going to want z68 equipped boards in exchange for theirs since they have been crapped on .
Oem manufacturers will just take the replacements .
So will "faulty chipset" private builders just keep their boards or return them!.
Haha@ its ok owners you can keep using your boards as normal until were ready to replace them.

new bmw owner gets a customer notice on his new car .
Dear customer,
Under heavy testing there has been a problem concerning 2nd gear.
For now what we recommend is not using second gear much, just change from 1st to 3rd unless you forget.
In some 5% of test samples the car eventually may not recognise 2nd gear at all..it will disappear.
Dont worry tho it will still be there with all its little cogs n stuff, just you wont be able to use it.

Sometime soon you will be able to send the gearbox back to be replaced, dont send back anything else or make noises about guarantees tho.
The first rule about guarantees is "dont talk about guarantees".

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Checking around .. newegg is the only one that has pulled sandybridge cpu's and "discontinued" them until further notice.

All the others u can find them if u search the sites and order them and mbrds too if you check around but all at pre problem prices.
Of course what we want is "damaged" goods at sale prices! like now..we can work around sata 2 ,even get seperate controllers,as long as we can get hold of 1155 stock at a massive discount before everything is fixed. Im up for it!.
Another 2 weeks or a month wont hurt me anyway and it will be something interesting to keep an eye on and strike if the time is right.
What Im thinking of is the moderate volume cpu supplers will have lots of 2000 cpu's on order even the i3 which was supposed to be available this month.

Soo with any luck they will be getting deliveries. and wont be able to afford to wait or will have some agreement with mbrd suppliers/intel to
a have to unload the cpus at discount prices or that in conjuction with useable in sata 3(6gb/s) only mode with the option of a free mbrd replacement later.
Discounted mbrd too of course :) .
That would be the end user ideal and I for one would chance it.
If nothing like that shows .I will of course moan as loud as anyone else about ,rushing products to retail is bad and all we want is reliable hardware.
No it isnt if we can get a great deal! otherwise weed just buy dellopackard matic pcs with no bios adjustment!.

What are u doing hout?
Im actually thinking of jumping on the sandybridge bandwagon too.
Prices here are 25-30% higher than US,but since US seems to have pulled the items(fear of lawsuits maybe?) and Europe hasnt I wont be able to get a "buddy" to mail me newegg cpu, mbrd is too large anyway.
I may hit the asrock 6 you guys have been talking about for 4 reasons,
cost
6 gives 6 sata III ports and they are unaffected,
the mbrd design allows use of a lga 775 cooler without an adapter.
z68 chipset only seems like a combo of p67 and h 67 and i shouldnt need the onchip gx.

atm I'm going to put it off for a bit, since this year seems to be worse than usual in terms of new releases. I likely won't get anything crazy top-end unless it's in an appropriate price range, but more likely than not if new shit comes out.. then current shit gets less expensive, which is still good.

Son of a bitch. Depending on how it's priced, I may or may not care. i7-2600K was only $350, which wasn't a bad choice given the i7-950 I was originally looking at was $295. If they drop the Ivy Bridge procs at like $375, then sure why the fuck not. If they're in the $500+ range.. pass, at the very least that should drop the SB procs' prices a bit.
