Windows 8 vs. Windows 7 - gaming

So i can't recall who was the pally (all i remember) myself and another guildie "argued" with the other day about gaming under windows 8 vs windows 7.

I'm not looking to add to re-heat the argument (not that i found it heated), but there you go, WOW is mentioned there as well:

Again, keep in mind that the test system is a high end system, but that should give you an idea, or at least i hope prove to you that the claims that were made in gchat were not in vain.

The real question is whether the "slight" performance boost is worth the cost associated with upgrading to Windows 8.

IMO, if you are currently running Win7 stay with it. The performance boost is not significant enough warrant the cost and effort associated with upgrading.

That being said, if you buy a new system preloaded with Win8, the same argument holds true. Unless you (like me) abhor the Metro UI on anything other than a tablet.

With the release of Win 8.1 and the return of the start menu I would strongly consider not downgrading to Win7. Jury is still out until I see a released version of Win 8.1.

Again, keep in mind that you're talking on a high end computer.

Most of us won't feel the difference between W7 and W8 in games, unless a game was specifically optimized for W8, and thats not the case (yet).

I personally will hold on to W7 for as long as i can, as i see no reason switching to W8.
Faster boot ? yes.
Better memory management ? yes.
Better multitasking ? yes.
All good... but the metro UI is enough for me to avoid it.

Btw, 8.1 brings back the start button, not menu.
Basically we're getting the orb back, clicking it will just take you to the metro UI. so all they are actually adding is a short cut for those who needed to actually click something but the corner of the screen.

I am pretty sure that being incompatible with a game that I actually own and plan on getting back to not better than Win7.

Look at the Sleeping Dogs page.

This gets at the whole heart of the issue. A one or two percent performance gain isn't better if the OS brings a host of other secondary issues that are going to detract more from my experience than a neglible performance boost would be adding.

The difference between those FPS rates is like asking would you get hurt worse by a car smacking you at 50 MPH or 51 MPH?

I think the safest thing to say is that if you want to try Windows 8 out, it won't affect raw performance negatively but you may find you have some other issues, such as a UI designed more for mobile devices than a PC.
